Clinic Assistance

Since the northern Nevada area does not have a full scale children’s oncology clinic, Renown Children’s Hospital continues to run an outpatient Pediatric Specialty Clinic where the majority of northern Nevada childhood cancer patients can be seen for some of their treatments. A team of doctors, lead by Dr. Caroline Hastings (Pediatric Oncologist/Hematologist) travels from Children’s Hospital on Oakland to the clinic at Renown to care for the children in our community. NNCCF supports the clinic by providing services such as the Beads of Courage Program, Kylee’s Reading Korner, cafeteria meal cards, taxi vouchers, DVD players a toy program and much more!

Kiley with Beads of Courage

In spring of 2009, NNCCF purchased $25,000 in equipment for Renown’s newly remodeled Children’s Infusion Center. Before the remodel, young patients received chemotherapy and other infusion treatments, including blood transfusions and medications – many lasting four to eight hours – in a space too tight for family members to be by their sides.

The new Children’s Infusion Center created a roomy, completely remodeled treatment area designed to make regular infusion sessions as convenient and comfortable as possible for patients and their families. The area houses a nurse’s station, four new junior treatment chairs along with accommodations for visitors. And for some fun, patients and visitors have access to entertainment items as well as a mobile library called Kylee’s Korner.

Kylee’s Korner

Named for Kylee LeSourd who lost her fight against cancer in 2008, Kylee’s Korner honors her memory and celebrates her love of reading. Kylee’s family keeps the shelves of a mobile library at the Children’s Infusion Center at Renown stocked with newly released and classic favorites for children and teens. “Like the many brave heroes in the pages of these books, Kylee LeSourd will forever be our brave and strong hero.” Kylee’s family hopes the books will help children fill the many hours of treatments.
