Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Shirley Folkins-Roberts as the new Executive Director. Shirley has been a dedicated advocate for children with cancer since 2003 and has a longstanding history with the foundation. She is a co-founder of NNCCF, served on the Board of Directors, and led teams of Nevada families to Washington D.C. to advocate for childhood cancer research funds. In her Executive Director role at NNCCF, Shirley will continue to procure sponsorships, oversee event logistics, advocate for more research funding, and help northern Nevada families navigate their journey through childhood cancer.
Shirley comes to NNCCF with a background in northern Nevada’s development industry and worked for Panattoni Development Company. Since 2014, Shirley has been involved in more than three million square feet of commercial real estate development. Shirley became a member of the California Bar in 1993 and the Nevada Bar in 2010 and has practiced with private firms in both states. She is an active member in the community helping organizations and serving on various boards such as Rotary Club of Reno Central and REMSA. The Board of Directors and NNCCF staff are excited to see her shine in her new role at NNCCF.
On September 1, NNCCF kicked off the annual Know the Gold campaign by asking community members and supporters to “Go Gold” for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. More than 100 businesses participated in raising awareness by hanging gold ribbon wreaths at their business and many included a fundraising element.
The Know the Gold Campaign is a 5-month-long community campaign to raise support and funds for northern Nevada families affected by childhood cancer. This year, the William N. Pennington Foundation will be matching donations dollar-for-dollar up to $300,000 through January 2019. To get involved, donate, or host your own fundraising event, visit nvchildrenscancer.org/knowthegold for more information.
We are incredibly grateful for another successful Tournament of Hope at Montreux Golf and Country Club. NNCCF celebrated its 14th annual golf tournament on September 18, 2018, and heard an amazing story from Juniper – she shared her journey with childhood cancer and was the first to tee off for the tournament. This year, 152 golfers raised more than $100k to support local families and children, like Juniper, affected by childhood cancer.

Press Release –
Governor Steve Sisolak Signs Proclamation Declaring September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
(Reno, NV) – Governor Steve Sisolak signed a proclamation declaring September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) worked with organizations in southern Nevada, the Nevada Cancer Coalition, Candlelighters and Cure 4 the Kids Foundation, to achieve this state proclamation.
“Support on a national, state and local level is crucial to helping children battling cancer in Nevada” said NNCCF Executive Director Shirley Folkins-Roberts. “Our state has embraced the fight of these brave children and this declaration is a large step in helping families fight this terrible disease.”
Nationally, one out of 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20 and approximately 44 children in northern Nevada are diagnosed each year.
This state declaration was accompanied by two additional local government declarations in Nevada signed by the City of Reno mayor, Hillary Schieve, and City of Fallon mayor, Ken Tedford.
Hundreds of non-profit organizations at the local and national level are helping support a cure for childhood cancer. NNCCF has collaborated with the national Children’s Oncology Group to increase funding for childhood cancer research, and hosts an annual event to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which is the largest private funder of pediatric cancer research.

This September, help spread the word about childhood cancer and how our foundation helps local kids fight off cancer! Rally friends, family and community members to raise awareness and donate to support a local child. The national symbol of childhood cancer is the gold ribbon and NNCCF is giving away free gold ribbon pins to anyone who wants to wear and support during the month of September.
There are many people in our community who are unaware about childhood cancer and how often it affects children right here in northern Nevada. Our foundation receives an average of 40 new kids each year, and the average length of treatment is three years. That means at any given point in the year we are assisting roughly 120 families who have a child in active treatment. These families are your neighbors; shop at the same grocery stores and eat at the same restaurants. They could be the car next to you in morning traffic, or in front of you ordering a tall coffee. You wouldn’t know they have a child fighting cancer, but our nonprofit can equip you with the tools to help them through their battle.
Speak – Tell your family, friends, coworkers and community members that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and let them know how many children are affected in our community.
Organize – Host a fundraiser during September and get creative! Find out more ways to host a fundraiser.
Share – Wear a gold ribbon pin, share using social media and use the hashtag #KnowTheGold. This helps broaden our reach to other potential advocates in northern Nevada. Like our Facebook page, and follow us on Twitter and Instagram.
Without support from the community, our foundation would not be able to help local children battling cancer with financial and emotional help. The average out-of-pocket cost for a family in the first year of treatment is $10,000. Families also face many unforeseen expenses such as medical bills not covered by insurance, travel expenses, and equipping the home for an immunocompromised child. We are grateful for our supporters and companies that help our foundation make supporting these families possible.
Children should not only survive, but thrive. Help us raise awareness and funds this September. Let’s support local children battling cancer to grow up cancer free! If you would like more information on how to participate and support the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation and our families please contact us, we would love to hear from you!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so all of us at NNCCF are gearing up for an action-packed, fun month of advocacy. Here are some of our upcoming events and projects:
“Childhood Cancer Awareness Month”:
The month of September is a nationally recognized time for special attention to be focused on children who have fought cancer, children who are currently fighting cancer, and those children’s’ families. It is also a time to rally support for new research initiatives, new donations, and new projects to support the childhood cancer cause. September is also called “Gold Ribbon Month” because the gold ribbon is the nationally recognized symbol of childhood cancer.
The “Know the Gold” Campaign:
This awareness and fundraising campaign will last from September 1, 2015, to January 31, 2016. You will see NNCCF displaying and distributing gold ribbons and different gold-ribbon related items to spread information about childhood cancer and promote the gold ribbon as a symbol of childhood cancer. September 1 initiates the campaign, and it ends on January 31 with a pledge drive!
NNCCF’s “Tournament of Hope”:
Our golf tournament called the “Tournament of Hope” will be happening on September 21, 2015 at Montreux Golf and Country Club. This is one of our largest events of the year. If you are interested in participating in the tournament, view sponsorship opportunities here.
The tournament also features a reception afterwards, where guests are able to hear inspiring stories from NNCCF families and other community members.
Our Coffee Club, “Coffee with a Heart”:
An established program here at NNCCF, our “Coffee with a Heart” program works with Blind Dog Coffee, a local coffee company. The owner of Blind Dog Coffee, Mark Berry, is a childhood cancer survivor himself. He was diagnosed with cancer at age two that left him almost completely blind. Mark lost one eye and part of his other eye due to his cancer treatment as a child, but his personal challenges have not stopped him from giving back to others. He works through his company Blind Dog Coffee Roasters to help children in the fight against cancer and their families.
This September we hope to grow this amazing program! If you become part of our NNCCF Coffee Club, you will get two fresh 1-pound bags of coffee per month from Blind Dog Coffee Roasters while simultaneously giving to a local family in need. Please help us remind people about this wonderful program! View details here.
If you would like to volunteer/participate in these September events, or have any questions about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month or our upcoming events and programs, please contact us, we would love to hear from you!

It’s official – we exceeded our Know the Gold Campaign goal of $250,000 and received the matching grant from the William N. Pennington Foundation. With the addition of a $50,000 anonymous gift and other donations received after the radiothon, we have reached a grand total of $309,657. We are pleased to announce the William N. Pennington was so impressed by our community’s generosity they have upped their grant to match the full amount we raised.
The five-month-long campaign kicks off each year in September when we rally supporters to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer. Individuals and businesses become our community partners and help raise money through hosting events like bake sales, CrossFit tournaments, golf tournaments, lemonade stands, etc. The campaign wraps up in January with an exciting grand finale radiothon. Every donation received allows us to provide more financial support to northern Nevada families. We are not federally or state funded, which means our nonprofit relies on the generosity of our community to help care for these children.
In January we received an unprecedented amount of new patient referrals. We certainly hope that this is not how the rest of the year will trend, but it is good to know we have the resources available to help these families and others in the coming months.
Last year, 57 percent of the support provided through our Family Assistance Fund went to travel costs and medical expenses. These expenses consisted of copays for emergency room visits, unpaid medical bills, emergency Care Flights, and gas to and from treatment. The remaining 43 percent went towards family care packages, emotional support, household expenses, rent or mortgage, and bereavement costs.
There is a great need in northern Nevada for financial and emotional support for families facing childhood cancer. Each family has a unique journey and we are here to help them discard worries and focus on their child’s health and recovery. There will be new faces that walk through our door and many returning as they continue to move forward through their cancer journey. As we progress through the year, we aim to grow our community of supporters as our NNCCF family grows with each new diagnosis.
A heartfelt thank you is in order for the William N. Pennington Foundation for their $250,000 match and additional $59,657. Without their challenge, we may have never achieved our goal. Their generosity inspired us to work with determination and face our challenges with courage.
Thank you to our radiothon sponsors: Cumulus Media and its stations KBUL 98.1, KKOH 780 AM, KNEV 99.5 and KWYL 102, Panattoni Development, Bonanno Concrete, Alston Construction, Granite Construction, Robin S. White (The Medical Profession, LLC), Scheels, Rounds Bakery, Chick-fil-A, Grimaldi’s, Conway Communications, and Intuit.
