Join us for a day of fun and philanthropy in honor of Colonel Mike Fugett.
Col. Fugett dedicated his life to serving his country, his community, and most importantly, his family. A decorated pilot with an extensive career in the U.S. Air Force and Nevada Air National Guard, Michael was known for his selflessness, leadership, and commitment to those around him. Just before his passing, Michael helped organize a golf tournament to raise funds for Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation, ensuring that local children battling cancer and their families received the support they so desperately need. In what would be one of his final speeches, he passionately urged his Air National Guard family to continue supporting NNCCF and the young warriors it serves.
In his honor, we are hosting the Col. Mike Fugett Memorial Golf Tournament to continue his mission of giving back. The tournament will raise crucial funds for NNCCF, an organization dedicated to assisting families in Northern Nevada facing the unimaginable challenge of childhood cancer.
Every Spring since 2013, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office takes on the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District at the Annual Guns and Hoses Golf Tournament at LakeRidge Golf Course in support of Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Over the past 13 years, this tournament has raised more than $300,000 for local families in the fight!
In 2011, a worried father took his little girl to the hospital after she scraped her knees. While at the hospital, he saw a brave young cancer warrior and his parents from across the waiting room. After discussing what he could do to help children like this young boy with his daughter’s nurse, he found NNCCF and the “Heroes and Hooligans” golf tournament was born!
Every summer, these hooligans turned heroes come together for a golf tournament to benefit the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Thank you to the event organizers, Nikki and Robert, for 14 beautiful years on the green!
Pulling For Our Little Heroes is an inspiring, multi-sport community event hosted by Calavera Barbell since 2013, bringing together team weightlifting and CrossFit to support the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Held each September during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, every penny raised goes directly to families facing the challenges of pediatric cancer.
Now in its 14th year (2026), the event takes place across two weekends:
Weightlifting Team Event
CrossFit Team Event (MMFF)
Teams are formed in fun divisions—CrossFit teams of four (2 male/2 female), and weightlifting teams of two in coed or age-group categories. A fundraising minimum is required to advance, with bonus recognition for teams raising over $1,000.
How you can help:
Register as a participant in the 14th annual event—whether you’re lifting, lifting, or cheering on others! Registration will be released in late August for Pulling for Our Little Heroes 2026

In 2013, Natalia was diagnosed with cancer, and within a few short months, she lost her battle at the age of 11. Her parents, Raul and Monica, the owners of El Adobe Cafe, are keeping her memory alive by helping raise funds and awareness of childhood cancer in northern Nevada. Thank you to all participating restaurants who gave back in Natalia’s honor on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, to make a difference in the lives of local childhood cancer warriors!
