NNCCF Thanks Local Business For Donations to Drive-In Event for Families

(Reno, NV) – The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) would like to thank Peterbilt Truck Parts and Equipment, Silver State International, Quick Space, Granite Construction Supply, Camelot Party Rentals and Cumulus Media Group for their donations to a drive-in event for NNCCF families. Due to the help of these community partners, the organization offered a showing of Disney Pixar’s Cars free of charge to local families impacted by childhood cancer at Peterbilt Truck Parts and Equipment in Sparks, NV.

“We’d like to thank all of the businesses that assisted our organization with this event,” said NNCCF Executive Director Shirley Folkins-Roberts. “Our families are often among the most vulnerable to COVID as they navigate treatment and will be isolated for an extended period of time. The way our community can come together to show support for our families and offer a safe night out is inspiring and we are grateful for their commitment and kindness.”

Families were able to safely enjoy the film and one attendee made the connection of a character in the movie being a Peterbilt truck. As the main character Lightening McQueen is searching the highway for Mack, his transport trailer to his races, he pulls up next to a truck on the highway. He calls for Mack and the truck informs Lightening McQueen that he isn’t Mack, he is a Peterbilt truck. “He’s a Peterbilt, just like the sign on the building!” said an NNCCF child.

All companies donated their services, time and materials to host the event specifically for the families of NNCCF. To donate to NNCCF visit www.nvchildrenscancer.org or to partner with an in-kind good or service contact Shirley Folkins-Roberts, Shirley@nvchildrenscancer.org or call (775) 825-0888.

Scholarships Awarded to 19 Childhood Cancer Survivors

(Reno, NV) – Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) awarded scholarships to 19 young adults at the Inspire Scholarship ceremony on July 26, 2018, at The Grove. The Inspire Program helps young adults who battled childhood cancer, or are currently in treatment, to continue their education.

NNCCF offers this program to support young adults who have been affected by childhood cancer in achieving their dreams. The Inspire Program has awarded $268,000 in scholarships to childhood cancer survivors since the program’s inception in 2012.

The awarded scholarships will be applied to many fields of study at an assortment of accredited universities, colleges, vocational and technical schools. This year’s recipients will be attending the University of Nevada, Reno, Boise State University, and Cal Poly among others. Recipients plan to pursue studies in architecture, hematology/oncology, nursing, journalism, teaching and much more.

Guest speaker James Bull, a childhood cancer survivor, delivered a motivating speech at the ceremony. “Being so young you get this premeditated idea for what the rest of your life will be like, but there is nothing that feels better than that captivating feeling of being alive. Like really alive,” said Bull. “You have so much to look forward to.  Make memories, take pictures, and live every day like it could be your last. Because we know first-hand how quickly that can be taken away.”

Each young adult submitted an essay and quote they find inspirational. Scholarship recipient Brittany Grecco shared her aspirations to reach for her dreams and be inspiring, “I hope to inspire others by leading through example that you will always get what you put in, that positivity will always win, and that there is always something to be grateful for.” Her inspirational quote is a Tweet from the band ModSun, “No matter the amount of negativity you’re presented with, 5 minutes from now could be your best moment.”

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office staff raises more than four thousand dollars for Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation in March as Sheriff’s “No Shave” campaign continues

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office staff donated more than four thousand dollars to the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation as part of the Sheriff’s “No Shave” charitable campaign.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office deputies have been allowed to grow facial hair outside the normal grooming standard since November if they supported designated charities each month. Female deputies have been allowed relaxed hair standards in exchange for their monthly donation and civilians may either take advantage of the relaxed grooming standards, or wear jeans or hats.

The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation was the designated charity for the month of March and yesterday Sheriff Chuck Allen and members of his staff presented a check for $4,285 to Lisa Shaffer, Director of Community Engagement.

Sheriff extends “No Shave” campaign for an additional month:

Due to the success of this year’s “No Shave” charitable effort, Sheriff Allen has decided to continue the campaign for one more month. The Sheriff has designated two causes for the month of April.

The first cause is a memorial fund for Sheriff’s Office employee Heidi Sasse who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year.

The second cause is in support Sheriff’s Office staff who will participate in this year’s Police Unity Tour.  The Police Unity Tour was founded in 1997 by a group of law enforcement officers from New Jersey. Since then, law enforcement officers nationwide have ridden the 300 plus mile trip, with the purpose of raising awareness and financial support for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Annual participation in the ride has grown from 18 members to over 2,200 nationwide, including members from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Riders start from various points on the east coast and end their ride at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. For more information about the Police Unity Tour, visit PoliceUnityTour.com.
