Recap on the Know the Gold Radiothon Fundraiser
titles_underlne

Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation in partnership with Scheels hosted the 11th annual Know the Gold Radiothon earlier this month.

The event marked a special occasion, as it was the finale to the six month long fundraising campaign with a goal of $500,000 to be matched by the William N. Pennington Foundation. Our supporters topped all records and exceeded the goal by $105,000 thanks to the last minute additional matching goal from Panattoni Development, Alston Construction and an anonymous donor.

In twenty years, NNCCF has provided $5.6 million dollars in direct financial assistance to local children battling cancer. Donations to NNCCF assist Northern Nevada families by alleviating the financial and emotional burden of cancer treatments, travel costs, medical debt and loss of income.

“The Know the Gold campaign is an incredible grassroots effort to help motivate our community to support local children who are fighting for their lives,” said Fayth Ross, NNCCF’s executive director. “Thanks to our matching donor, the donations doubled, which makes an enormous impact to local families who have been affected by childhood cancer. We cannot thank this incredible community enough for all they do to support us and those who donated to help us reach and exceed our goal!”

The Know the Gold campaign is a community driven fundraiser that encourages local individuals, businesses, schools, churches and organizations to raise funds for children in the Northern Nevada region with cancer. It began in September 2021 during Childhood Cancer Awareness month. The campaign funds came from multiple events including a Christmas-themed horse show, a magic show, a blackjack tournament, a wrestling tournament, lemonade stands along with other events.

The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation is the only non-profit in the region solely dedicated to helping Northern Nevada children and their families affected by childhood cancer. NNCCF’s programs and services include the Family Assistance Fund, Inspire survivorship program, Hope for the Holidays program and emotional support through No More Chemo celebrations and family activities. Shave for the Brave – Why we shave and how you can help.

Shavee kissing another participant's shaved headThe Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation supports finding a cure for childhood cancer and has helped fundraise for research by hosting its Shave for the Brave event each year in March. This year, NNCCF is striving to make the 17th Annual Shave for the Brave event the best one yet!

Shave for the Brave is a family-friendly event, and supporters are encouraged to watch the spectacle of 200 heads shaved on the grand stage at the Reno Ballroom. To participate, register as a shavee and start fundraising, or join us to cheer on our fundraising teams at the event on March 4th!

Since 2006, NNCCF has shaved more than 4,000 local heads and raised $3 million for childhood cancer research. NNCCF is not a research organization, but its mission includes advocating for increased research funds for childhood cancer. Hosting the annual Shave for the Brave event helps NNCCF support pediatric cancer research and the overall search for a cure. NNCCF partnered with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation because it is the largest private funder of childhood cancer research.

Why is fundraising for NNCCF’s Shave for the Brave event important?
Here are some facts that you should know:
Shave for the Brave 2020 Statistics:

NNCCF’s Shave for the Brave 2021 event in Reno raised $116,723 for childhood cancer research. 114 people shaved their heads from home during the virtual event held on zoom.

The community’s support is needed to help reach new 2021 goals. Each team will be fundraising to support childhood cancer research. Many teams honor a child that has been affected by cancer, and your donation will help recognize those children and their journey with cancer.

Here’s how the Shave for the Brave event works:

“Barbers” are certified cosmetologists who volunteer each year for the event and shave the participant’s head with clippers. “Shavees” can raise money by collecting pledges from family, friends, and members of the community to support childhood cancer research. The participants can pre-register online where there’s an opportunity to sign up as an individual or join a team. The Shave for the Brave fundraising platform is easy to use and individualized pages for each Shavee can be shared easily with friends and family.

Teams and participants can sign up here!

All donations will go directly to the St. Baldrick’s general foundation fund.

The fundraising goal for the 2022 Shave for the Brave event is $100,000, with your help, this is possible. Please donate to support childhood cancer research here. The Shave for the Brave fundraising event is your chance support childhood cancer research and local children affected in northern Nevada. In the first sixteen years of Shave for the Brave, our northern Nevada community has raised over $3,000,000 to support critical research for a cure and improved treatment for pediatric cancer, but we cannot stop now!

NNCCF’s 15th Annual Shave for the Brave event at the Reno Ballroom on March 20, 2020, is CANCELED.

The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation has decided to avoid potential exposure of the coronavirus (COVID-19) to our families, participants, and community. We serve many children with compromised immune systems and their health, and that of our community and staff, is our highest priority.

You are invited to take your shave virtual!

We are grateful for your understanding at this time, and want to make sure that your experience is as rewarding as it should be.  Host your team or shave by yourself with your favorite hairdresser or barber. NNCCF staff will be contacting team captains on how to best help their team with a virtual shave. We encourage you to share your experience virtually on social media, by posting or hosting it live. Check out this guide on how to set up Facebook Live. Be sure to tag @nvkidscancer and @stbaldricks and use the hashtag #ShavefortheBrave #VirtualShave2020.

Your profile for Shave for the Brave on the St. Baldrick’s site is still active, and you can continue to receive online donations from your supporters. Please read the guidelines on sending your cash donations to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and please send all checks directly to St. Baldricks with the completed donation form. Remember to fill out the forms with Event Title: Shave for the Brave and Event ID# 45.

Thank you for your participation and efforts in fundraising. This event has made a significant impact on childhood cancer research in the last 15 years, and we want to make sure that your hard work and efforts are recognized. You have helped raise more than $2.8 million in research funds, and this year you have already raised more than $100,000. Please mark your calendars for our 2021 event, on March 5, 2021.

Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and one out of five of them will not survive. Your support makes a difference for them. Your contributions and fundraising efforts will help researchers find safer treatments for growing bodies, and someday a cure for childhood cancer.

Thank you for your unwavering support.

Press Release –

Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation Launches $300,000 Matching Gift Challenge

(Reno, NV) – Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) announces a $300,000 gift match challenge. Now through January 31, 2019, all contributions to NNCCF’s Know the Gold Campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the William N. Pennington Foundation, up to $300,000.

Donations to the Know the Gold Campaign help local children diagnosed with cancer. A gift to NNCCF could help ease the financial devastation childhood cancer places on families who must spend time away from work to be by their child’s hospital bed. A donation to NNCCF could cover the cost of an emergency room visit or travel costs to receive care from a specialized doctor.

“Each and every dollar donated assists our kiddos and families with the emotional shock and financial upheaval that they experience as a result of this disease,” said Shirley Folkins-Roberts, executive director of NNCCF. “The Pennington Foundation exemplifies the generosity of our community which is so specific to Northern Nevada.”

Donations made to NNCCF before the end of January are eligible for the match, including contributions by mail, online and over the phone. Visit www.nvchildrenscancer.org or call 775-825-0888.

“The Know the Gold campaign is special to us at NNCCF because participants range from kids with their piggy banks to special event and corporate employee giving campaigns, matches, and everything in between,” said Folkins-Roberts.

The mission of NNCCF is to enhance the quality of life for children with cancer and their families by providing financial assistance and compassionate support programs, all while advocating for increased research funds and raising public awareness.

Know the Gold Campaign Recap

We felt the momentum of the Know the Gold Radiothon early in the day; the snowball effect was starting, and we were excited to watch it grow. The radiothon took place on January 25, 2019, at Scheels from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. With every NNCCF family that stopped by and shared their story, there was a direct effect on the amount of people calling the phone banks, stopping by or going online to donate.

An additional element to the campaign was the gift match challenge by the William N. Pennington Foundation. The foundation agreed to match all donations up to the Know the Gold Campaign goal of $300,000. Our mission was to raise $50,000 the day of the radiothon to meet the goal, but we could have never planned or imagined what actually happened. Just shy of 4 o’clock in the afternoon, the William N. Pennington Foundation challenged us to raise an extra $50,000 as a handful of donations put us over the original Know the Gold Campaign goal.

Childhood Cancer SurvivorThe announcement heightened the energy of the radiothon and everyone participating in Scheels. The talent on the radio stations compelled listeners to help us reach the new goal. Friends, family members and event attendees called and texted their contacts to encourage donations. Even an NNCCF child came in with her piggy bank to support other kids like her. In the last hour of the radiothon, our community raised more than $32,000.
Thank you to all of the individual donors, community partners and supporters during the radiothon and throughout our Know the Gold Campaign. Due to your support, we exceeded our campaign goal with a total of…

$357,778.

The Know the Gold Campaign is a community-driven fundraising effort to support local children diagnosed with cancer. Individuals, businesses, schools, churches and groups become our community partners and dedicate their time throughout the year to fundraise for NNCCF. Every charity golf tournament, lemonade stand, Facebook fundraiser and office swear jar helps NNCCF support northern Nevada families affected by a childhood cancer diagnosis.

Many community partners raise funds specifically during the Know the Gold Campaign because of its unique gift match element. The William N. Pennington Foundation has supported local families through childhood cancer by matching the funds raised through our annual Know the Gold Campaign since 2016.

The funds raised and matched during the campaign help alleviate the emotional and financial burden that a childhood cancer diagnosis can place on a local family. In 2018, 61 percent of the support NNCCF provided to local families helped with medical and travel costs such as uncovered medical procedures, emergency room visits, travel costs and lodging when away from the home due to treatment. The other 39 percent assisted families with emotional support, loss of income experienced from taking time off work to be by their child’s bedside, educational expenses, family care packages and bereavement costs.Know the Gold Radiothon

We are grateful for the generosity of the William N. Pennington Foundation and for their ability to inspire more giving in our community. Thank you for giving our foundation the opportunity to care for northern Nevada families in ways we only dreamed possible. Thank you to all of the community partners that support us each year when we kick off the Know the Gold Campaign in September. Community Partner fundraising efforts are a testament to the caring nature of our community.

Thank you to our Know the Gold Radiothon sponsors: Cumulus Media; its talented radio personalities and stations KBUL 98.1, KKOH 780 AM, KNEV 99.5 and KWYL 102, Bonanno Concrete and MDB Trucking, Panattoni Development, Alston Construction, Granite Construction, Sierra Nevada Construction, Tectonics Design Group, Desert Fire Protection, The Medical Profession, Scheels, Conway Communications, Victory Woodworks, Vasko Electric and RHP Medical Systems.

It’s not too late to help NNCCF support childhood cancer research and the search for a cure.

Our goal is to raise $200,000 to support more research grants and clinical trials that can save kid’s lives. We are almost there! Visit to donate.

On Friday, March 15, 2019, we held our 14th annual Shave for the Brave event to raise funds for childhood cancer research. At the downtown Reno Ballroom, we hosted 223 participants to shave their heads in support of finding a cure for cancer. Participants from all around Nevada joined this spectacular event.

St. Baldrick's Head ShaveThank you to our participants and the generous people supporting our participants for contributing to childhood cancer research. The success of our Shave of the Brave event is because of you, and we are grateful for your generous hearts.

As of today, participants and donors have raised $182,154, but the fundraising isn’t over. The community is still finding ways to raise funds and help researchers find better treatments. If you would like to support our event, an individual or a team to reach their fundraising goal, click here. The 2019 grand total of money raised for childhood cancer research will be announced in July when the event officially wraps up.

Remember – childhood cancer research helps adults too! According to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation “Much of what we know about treating adult cancers has been learned from childhood cancer research. Some aspects of cancer treatment today, such as combination chemotherapy, can be traced to pediatric cancer research.”

Fundraising for our Shave for the Brave event is unique because of the head-shaving element. Participants collect donations and pledges to reach their goal, then they step onto the big stage and a barber shaves their head. Many participants shave in memory or in honor of a family member, friend, coworker or another inspirational individual – some participants are cancer survivors themselves.

Our first head-shaving event for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation took place in 2006. We shaved 61 heads and raised $86,399 for childhood cancer research. Since our first event, we have seen significant advances in childhood cancer research and treatments available. Today, about 90% of kids with the most common type of cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, will live and join the growing population of long-term childhood cancer survivors.

Last year, our Shave for the Brave event was the 16th highest revenue-raising event (out of 1,081 events) for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. And with our help, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation was able to give more than 140 grants to some of the best childhood cancer researchers in the world in 2018. This included more than 230 institutions conducting 116 clinical trials for children with cancer.

We chose the St. Baldrick’s Foundation because they focus solely on childhood cancer research. Their mission is to find cures for childhood cancers and to give survivors long and healthy lives. They are the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants and give kids nationwide access to the very latest in research and clinical trials. They are also great at reviewing grants and only fund the very best in childhood cancer research.

It is part of our mission at NNCCF to advocate for increased research funds, which also includes us doing our own fundraising for childhood cancer research. While we are able to enhance the quality of life for children with cancer in northern Nevada by providing financial assistance and compassionate support programs, we also support the research that will help them beat cancer.

Amazon Wish List – Keep our toy closet stocked with ease.

We launched our first Amazon Wish List to provide toys for local kids affected by childhood cancer. Amazon’s extensive catalog makes it easy to find toys suitable for children experiencing long or frequent hospital stays, and our wish list gives you an insight into what we need throughout the year.

Wish lists on Amazon function similar to wedding registries – we update the items needed based on popularity, season, age range, etc. Using the Amazon Wish List makes donating toys easier than ever. View the list and simply click “add to cart” and it will ship directly to NNCCF.

There are many popular toys on this list (ex: Toy Story Legos, Paw Patrol toys) and more that we have yet to discover. Our Amazon Wish List can also serve as a guide for your next toy drive or individual donation. We will always accept new toys even if they are not on this list.

On our Wish List, you will find our selection of trending toys that can be used by children in treatment and an array of items that can entertain children of all ages. The list is practical and helps give insight to the needs and wants of our families. However what the list doesn’t display is how important these toys are to the children, siblings and parents. “The toys we provide have a greater significance to our families than a way to amuse a child during a car ride to the hospital. The toys help serve an escape from the trials at hand.” Read more about the importance of our toy closet to local children battling cancer: The Toy Closet: the reward, the bribe, the cabinet of smiles.

Many business and individuals host toy drives to support our nonprofit during the year. One of our favorite types of fundraisers are “in lieu of Birthday presents.” We have had children, inspired to help kids like them, run toy donation drives in lieu of receiving birthday presents. The giving and kind hearts of these children are inspiring to model after.

One of our Community Partners, Carrington College held a toy drive in February in honor Logan, a child currently in treatment. For the entire month, they had a donation station set up and encouraged students and professors alike to bring in a toy for a local child battling cancer. The results were astonishing. Each basket was packed to the brim with toys. The Carrington College community came together and made a donation of toys and other goods valued more than $1,000.

Community Partner toy drives like this help support our foundation and bring smiles to the children we serve. There are a few simple steps to host your own toy drive for your business, group, church or school.

  1. Come up with a creative name for your toy drive – i.e. “Logan’s Lego Drive for NNCCF”- and share on social media, in your break room, on bulletin boards and more.
  2. Send out our wish list and provide in your communications – everyone likes having an idea of what is actually wanted and needed.
  3. Set a time frame and price range – it is helpful to know when the toys are due by and if you are asking for certain types of toys.
  4. Host a donation station – your coworkers and friends can watch the amount grow, and feel inspired by the accomplishment.
  5. Give Alicia Rasmussen a call 775-825-0888 (or email Alicia@nvchildrenscancer.org) and let her know! We will schedule a time for you to present your toys. It’s a perfect photo opportunity.

We are grateful for the donors that provide for our toy closet throughout the year, especially during the summer months. Have you heard of the term Christmas in July? We are dreaming of Santa’s little elves barging through our doors with bags of toys for girls and boys! Every year towards the end of spring, we call on our donors and community partners to help stock the shelves, and we are hoping our newly created Amazon Wish List helps provide helpful ideas and an opportunity to do so.
