Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation joins Smith’s Inspiring Donations program which offers customers a simple way to support local children battling cancer.

Shopping with the Smith’s Rewards Card allows you to buy groceries and everyday necessities while donating a portion of the proceeds to the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF). Launched by Smith’s Food and Drug store in July of 2017, the company replaced all previous donation reward programs with Smith’s Inspiring Donations.

This program donates 0.5% of all eligible spending to NNCCF at no extra cost and does not affect the fuel points or coupon discounts already linked to your Smith’s account. Kroger, the parent company of Smith’s, has contributed more than $220 million annually in food, funds, and other products to support communities and nonprofit organizations. Kroger is dedicated to “community engagement, positive social impact, and charitable giving at the national and local levels.”

With Smith’s Inspiring Donations program, you can easily earn rewards on most items located in stores every time you shop. It is important to remember to swipe the Rewards Card or use the phone number linked to your account when checking out.

Happy first day of fall! We are officially in pumpkin season – pumpkin coffee, pumpkin cookies and pumpkin candles! Check out these 8 ways to rock the fall while raising funds for kids affected by cancer.

1. Pumpkin Carving Contest – Pumpkin carving is a perfect way to engage the kids and show off some amazing talent! Ask participants to pay a small fee to compete. Send us a picture of the winning pumpkin and earn bragging rights for the rest of the year.

2. Chili Cook-off – Warm some tummies and raise some monies! A fee upon entry gives attendants the opportunity to sample all teams then cast their vote for their favorite chili master.

3. Flag Football Tournament – Recruit your neighbors, family and friends. Adults and kids can play!

4. Host a Trivia Night – Do you know what a baby turkey is called? It’s a poult! Maybe throw some trivia about NNCCF in there too.

5. Harvest Festival – Fall is a perfect time to be outside and get together with family, friends and neighbors. Host a festival for your community or church and donate the proceeds.

6. Costume Contest – Who has the best costume or spookiest office at your workplace? Encourage coworkers to dress up or decorate their space – everyone pitches in a donation and winner gets featured on our site!

7. Football Tailgate – Host a family-friendly tailgate for a Nevada game. Bust out your corn-hole sets, grill hotdogs and hamburgers and wear Nevada blue! Have attendees donate to enjoy your tailgate fundraiser.

8. Fall 5k – Host a Turkey Trot or Great Pumpkin Run! Encourage individuals and teams to run or walk 3.1 miles this fall and donate the entry fees.

There are many creative ways to raise funds for kids here in northern Nevada that are in treatment for cancer. Your fundraising efforts and donations go a long way, as they help pay for expenses including travel costs, copays and bills that insurance will not cover.

Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation wants your fundraiser to be a success! Please contact us with information about your fundraiser so we can put your event on our website. We will also equip you with a banner, book marks with gold ribbon pins, and more information about our foundation.

Bald Girl with Cancer - Giving TuesdayIf you’re looking for a local charity to give to during the holidays, consider the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation! We are a nonprofit located in Reno, Nevada, helping northern Nevada children diagnosed with cancer.

November 28, 2017 is #GivingTuesday

[button text=”Give now” link=”https://www.nvchildrenscancer.org/donate/general-donation/”]

Here are some examples of what your gift could provide:

– Masks for children with compromised immune systems
– Medical bills not covered by insurance
– Travel costs to and from treatment
– Copay for an emergency room visit
– Care package for a newly diagnosed family

After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s Giving Tuesday. Many people consider it the kick-off to holiday and end-of-year giving. This inaugural event started in 2012 and grew into a movement that celebrates giving and philanthropy. Many local nonprofits will be participating this year, and we encourage you to be a part of the movement and promote the spirit of generosity.

Your donation will go a long way in providing emotional and financial support for a family with a child diagnosed with cancer. NNCCF assists families with costs like medical expenses, insurance deductibles, uncovered procedures, travel costs and additional expenses the family might need assistance with during a child’s treatment.

Our goals are to alleviate the financial burden and emotional strain that comes with a child cancer diagnosis, and to expand public awareness of childhood cancer. We promote research to find a cure for cancer, so our children can grow up healthy and cancer free. Our foundation further assists families throughout their child’s treatment by connecting them with other local, regional and national resources.

Join us in making a difference in the lives of these children. We have many different giving options and have convenient online donation options. Let’s help them achieve their dreams and grow up cancer free.

5 Tips 2018[/one_half][one_half_last]

What can you do in 2018? 5 tips to start you off on the right foot.

It’s the start of a new year and many of us turn our attention to self-improvement and New Year resolutions. On top of being your best self, we encourage you to jumpstart the year by helping improve the quality of life of local children battling cancer. So here’s the question – What can you do in 2018?

At the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF), we strive to release the emotional and financial burden childhood cancer has on affected children and their families. Childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the United States and we strive to change that statistic. With your support, our nonprofit can provide crucial support for local children and advocate for a cure and better treatment.[/one_half_last]

To help you host your own fundraiser and become a Community Partner, here are five major tips that will start you off on the right foot.

Tip Number 1Visit NNCCF

When you are brainstorming your fundraiser, the best thing to do is stop by our office and take a tour. Not only can we give you information about successful fundraisers in the past, we can equip you with posters, pins and other materials to enrich your event.

Tip Number 2Set Goals

Every charitable event needs goals and a purpose! Considering the purpose of your event is to raise money for NNCCF, your event may also help you reach out to a new network or gain publicity for your business. It is best to set goals for funds raised, awareness, social impact and media coverage. Your fundraising event should be exactly what you intend it for and setting goals will help you keep it on track.

Tip Number 3Define your Budget

There’s the saying “Spend money to make money” and we want you to be prepared with a realistic budget. When you are setting your budget, keep in mind that you may have expenses i.e. your time spent, materials created or renting a venue. The general rule of thumb is that you deduct expenses from funds raised and then donate the proceeds.

Tip Number 4Plan for Marketing

Once you fill out our Community Partner Agreement Form, your event will go up on our website. When we include your event, it is always helpful to have logos, photos, flyers or something that gives a visual to your event. We also encourage you to tag us on social media @nvkidscancer. It helps legitimize your fundraiser and social media is a powerful tool to reach a large audience.

Tip number 5Celebrate!

When you complete your event, we fully expect you come into our office and celebrate! We are grateful for your efforts and any donated amount deserves a pat on the back. NNCCF is not federally funded, so each gifted dollar is imperative to helping local children with cancer.

Childhood Cancer Toy Cabinet

Our extensive toy cabinet is a beacon of light for the children who enter our door. The toy cabinet offers an escape from treatment and a way to reconnect through games, puzzles, crafts, toys, and more. Children battling cancer and their siblings are encouraged to choose a brand new toy from the cabinet. Toys are also given to children in their new family care packages.

In efforts to keep our toy cabinet stocked, we encourage you to follow these lists of what works best with children who have long trips to treatment or hospital stays in a small room.

For younger children:

For teens:

Toys to avoid:

Plush animals and dolls – these can be difficult to clean and can be hazardous to children in treatment with compromised immune systems.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office staff raises more than four thousand dollars for Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation in March as Sheriff’s “No Shave” campaign continues

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office staff donated more than four thousand dollars to the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation as part of the Sheriff’s “No Shave” charitable campaign.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office deputies have been allowed to grow facial hair outside the normal grooming standard since November if they supported designated charities each month. Female deputies have been allowed relaxed hair standards in exchange for their monthly donation and civilians may either take advantage of the relaxed grooming standards, or wear jeans or hats.

The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation was the designated charity for the month of March and yesterday Sheriff Chuck Allen and members of his staff presented a check for $4,285 to Lisa Shaffer, Director of Community Engagement.

Sheriff extends “No Shave” campaign for an additional month:

Due to the success of this year’s “No Shave” charitable effort, Sheriff Allen has decided to continue the campaign for one more month. The Sheriff has designated two causes for the month of April.

The first cause is a memorial fund for Sheriff’s Office employee Heidi Sasse who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year.

The second cause is in support Sheriff’s Office staff who will participate in this year’s Police Unity Tour.  The Police Unity Tour was founded in 1997 by a group of law enforcement officers from New Jersey. Since then, law enforcement officers nationwide have ridden the 300 plus mile trip, with the purpose of raising awareness and financial support for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Annual participation in the ride has grown from 18 members to over 2,200 nationwide, including members from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Riders start from various points on the east coast and end their ride at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. For more information about the Police Unity Tour, visit PoliceUnityTour.com.

NNCCF contributes to childhood cancer research by hosting the Shave for the Brave fundraising event for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This year, we are celebrating our 13th Shave for the Brave event. Considering our foundation is not a research organization, hosting this fundraiser is an opportunity for us to support pediatric cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Last year, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation supported childhood cancer research grants and advocacy with $30,537,369.

Why is fundraising for NNCCF’s Shave for the Brave event important? Here are two facts that you should know:

Here’s how our Shave for the Brave event works: “Shavees” raise money by collecting pledges from family members and friends in support of childhood cancer research. Shavees can fundraise individually or join a team.  “Barbers” are certified cosmetologists or barbers that volunteer for the event, and shave participants’ heads with clippers until all hair is gone! Men, women, and children participate in this inspiring event.

To find current teams or to make your own click here. The fundraising platform is easy to use, and you can conveniently share your page with family and friends.

“They say two heads are better than one, so a whole team of bald heads is way better than one bald head. Teams can fundraise together (try a car wash or group garage sale) and encourage one another before, during, and after your head shaving event.” – St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Need help fundraising? Check out these fundraising tips and tricks from St. Baldrick’s. Please do not fundraise via Facebook. All donations made through Facebook fundraisers go directly to the St. Baldrick’s general donation fund, and cannot be transferred to participants, teams, events or other pages.

If you are interested in donating click here. Consider choosing an individual or team that needs a little extra support!

2017 Stats

NNCCF’s Shave for the Brave 2017 in Reno raised $227,079 for childhood cancer research. More than 240 people shaved their heads, 21 barbers volunteered their time, and more than 300 people attended. The event made it into St. Baldrick’s Top 20 largest fundraising events. Our top three Shave for the Brave 2017 teams’ accomplishments are below:

Your support is needed to help our teams reach new goals. Each team will be selflessly fundraising around our community to support childhood cancer research. Many teams honor a child that has been affected by cancer, and your donation will help recognize those children and their journey with cancer. Six Easy Tips to be a Top Fundraising Team

Kehl is the team captain for Kylee’s Wish. Last year the team raised $57,456 for childhood cancer research, and in 11 years they have raised almost half a million dollars. Each year they participate in NNCCF’s Shave for the Brave event and rally the Reno/Sparks community in the most inspiring ways.

Kylee's Wish Reno

Kehl put together six tips to help participants and team captains:

Lead by example. Take on as much as you can personally. This shows your team you have skin in the game. It’s easy for most folks to just donate something, putting in the time and effort is the hard part.

Be prepared for changes. Just like cancer, stuff happens and you just have to adjust and make the best of it.

Embrace everyone, and if you can, try to reach out in person as much as possible.

Most of all a simple “thank you” goes a really long way. These people work really hard and do as much as they can. Team captains need to appreciate each and everyone’s own efforts.

Do a theme each year for your team. This makes it fun for everyone!

When Lisa (from NNCCF) calls help her, we want her to stick around.

Put these tips to good use! We want all of our participants for the head-shaving event to be successful.

Shave for the Brave is March 16, 2018 at the Downtown Reno Ballroom. It starts at 6 p.m. and ends when the last head is shaved (around 8 p.m.).

You still have time to join our head shaving event! Visit here to get started. There’s a minimum donation of $100 to shave at this event.

Remember – shaving with a team can make the experience more fun. You can receive support from your team and team captain. If you haven’t registered yet and would like to join a team visit here.

The pre-shave event, in conjunction with St. Baldrick’s and the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation, will be held from 4:00 to 6:30 pm at Fire Station One at 1605 Victorian Avenue.

“We will open our doors and give a red-carpet tour to children and their families who have been affected by cancer,” explained Sparks Firefighter Mike Shaw, organizer of the event. “Sparks Firefighters have supported the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation and St. Baldrick’s for many years and we are proud to host this year’s pre-shave at our department headquarters.”

The children will have to opportunity to check out fire trucks and gear, then several firefighters, including city of Sparks Fire Chief Chris Maples, will shave their heads. The pre-shave event leads up to the March 16 St. Baldrick’s community-wide fundraiser.

“Each year around St. Patrick’s Day, we ask the community to shave their heads and go bald in support of childhood cancer research,” said Lisa Shaffer, Director of Community engagement for the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. “In partnership with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, our annual ‘Shave for the Brave’ events have raised more than $2.4 million since 2006. We have shaved more than 3,600 local heads, advocating for increased research funds. Our sincere hope is that one day our kids will be cancer-free.”

“This will be the third time I’ve participated,” Fire Chief Chris Maples said. “As a cancer survivor, I wholeheartedly support St. Baldrick’s as they search to cure a disease that affects so many children.”

The Sparks Firefighter’s goal is to raise $7,800. To donate to the Sparks Firefighter’s team, please go to stbaldricks.org/teams/SFD.
