20 Year Celebration at Know the Gold Radiothon

On January 31, 2020, we hosted our annual Know the Gold Radiothon at Scheels. The event marked a special occasion, as it was the finale to our 5-month-long Know the Gold fundraising campaign and launch of our 20-year celebration. Nine years ago, we raised $100,000 at our first radiothon with the help of Cumulus Media and our generous donors and community partners. This year, the goal was to reach $400,000 by the end of the radiothon, all of which would be matched dollar-for-dollar by the William N. Pennington Foundation.

Our supporters topped all records exceeding the goal by $37,000. The William N. Pennington Foundation was so inspired by the substantial community support that the final grant awarded was increased to $450,000. All of the funds that support our foundation are from local sources and help local families, and with thanks to you and our partners in the community, we can continue helping them in 2020.

We are grateful for the partnerships that have added to the success of the 5-month-long Know the Gold Campaign and Radiothon. For nine years, we have partnered with Scheels to host the radiothon and worked side-by-side with the Cumulus Media radio stations, KBUL 98.1, KKOH 780 News Talk, Wild 102.9 and 95.5 The Vibe, to promote the fundraiser. The William N. Pennington Foundation joined the cause by matching the funds raised in 2016 and has encouraged higher fundraising goals each year since.

_______________

Ringing with Hope

At the radiothon, we kicked-off our 20th year of service with a bell-ringing program. The bell serves as a symbol of hope while the child and their family endure hospital visits, chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries, and more. Not only does ringing the bell mark the end of treatment, but also the end to an often long and difficult journey with childhood cancer. We are grateful for the seven childhood cancer survivors who rang the bell again to celebrate this 20-year milestone and bring hope to all the children who have yet to ring the bell.

The program was hosted by JJ Christy with Cumulus Media, and featured special guests Doug Roberts, with Panattoni Development and NNCCF co-founder, Mike Krukow, Emmy Award-winning announcer with the San Francisco Giants, and Casey Stiteler, former NNCCF child and first childhood cancer survivor to serve on the NNCCF Board of Directors.

Krukow chose NNCCF as an organization to support two years ago and since has encouraged engagement with fans and friends. He influenced a $10,000 donation to NNCCF from the Renown Health Foundation, which was included in the Radiothon match by Pennington. His generosity, and that of our community partners, will support our families with the financial and emotional burden of childhood cancer. Krukow will also be hosting NNCCF’s signature fundraiser A Giant Event for Childhood Cancer event for NNCCF in November.

“Know that this organization is one that helps the little people who are afflicted by the worst disease. And that by you making a difference – it makes a difference for them,” said Krukow.

______________

The Holidays at NNCCF

NNCCF experienced an outpour of support from the community during the holiday season. We had many donations of toys, blankets, books and more to make sure our families felt loved and supported. It was an unprecedented year for our Hope for the Holidays program with more than 40 new families, or families in active treatment, adopted for gifts in December.

Our annual holiday party, Polar Express and pajama themed, had more than 250 children and family members who joined in the festivities – which included face painting, crafts, DJ, photo booth, and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Thank you to our volunteers and partners for making the event a success.

Shave for the Brave – Why we shave and how you can help.

Shavee kissing another participant's shaved headThe Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation supports finding a cure for childhood cancer and has helped fundraise for research by hosting its Shave for the Brave event each year in March. This year, NNCCF is striving to make the 17th Annual Shave for the Brave event the best one yet!

Shave for the Brave is a family-friendly event, and supporters are encouraged to watch the spectacle of 200 heads shaved on the grand stage at the Reno Ballroom. To participate, register as a shavee and start fundraising, or join us to cheer on our fundraising teams at the event on March 4th!

Since 2006, NNCCF has shaved more than 4,000 local heads and raised $3 million for childhood cancer research. NNCCF is not a research organization, but its mission includes advocating for increased research funds for childhood cancer. Hosting the annual Shave for the Brave event helps NNCCF support pediatric cancer research and the overall search for a cure. NNCCF partnered with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation because it is the largest private funder of childhood cancer research.

Why is fundraising for NNCCF’s Shave for the Brave event important?
Here are some facts that you should know:
Shave for the Brave 2020 Statistics:

NNCCF’s Shave for the Brave 2021 event in Reno raised $116,723 for childhood cancer research. 114 people shaved their heads from home during the virtual event held on zoom.

The community’s support is needed to help reach new 2021 goals. Each team will be fundraising to support childhood cancer research. Many teams honor a child that has been affected by cancer, and your donation will help recognize those children and their journey with cancer.

Here’s how the Shave for the Brave event works:

“Barbers” are certified cosmetologists who volunteer each year for the event and shave the participant’s head with clippers. “Shavees” can raise money by collecting pledges from family, friends, and members of the community to support childhood cancer research. The participants can pre-register online where there’s an opportunity to sign up as an individual or join a team. The Shave for the Brave fundraising platform is easy to use and individualized pages for each Shavee can be shared easily with friends and family.

Teams and participants can sign up here!

All donations will go directly to the St. Baldrick’s general foundation fund.

The fundraising goal for the 2022 Shave for the Brave event is $100,000, with your help, this is possible. Please donate to support childhood cancer research here. The Shave for the Brave fundraising event is your chance support childhood cancer research and local children affected in northern Nevada. In the first sixteen years of Shave for the Brave, our northern Nevada community has raised over $3,000,000 to support critical research for a cure and improved treatment for pediatric cancer, but we cannot stop now!

NNCCF’s 15th Annual Shave for the Brave event at the Reno Ballroom on March 20, 2020, is CANCELED.

The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation has decided to avoid potential exposure of the coronavirus (COVID-19) to our families, participants, and community. We serve many children with compromised immune systems and their health, and that of our community and staff, is our highest priority.

You are invited to take your shave virtual!

We are grateful for your understanding at this time, and want to make sure that your experience is as rewarding as it should be.  Host your team or shave by yourself with your favorite hairdresser or barber. NNCCF staff will be contacting team captains on how to best help their team with a virtual shave. We encourage you to share your experience virtually on social media, by posting or hosting it live. Check out this guide on how to set up Facebook Live. Be sure to tag @nvkidscancer and @stbaldricks and use the hashtag #ShavefortheBrave #VirtualShave2020.

Your profile for Shave for the Brave on the St. Baldrick’s site is still active, and you can continue to receive online donations from your supporters. Please read the guidelines on sending your cash donations to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and please send all checks directly to St. Baldricks with the completed donation form. Remember to fill out the forms with Event Title: Shave for the Brave and Event ID# 45.

Thank you for your participation and efforts in fundraising. This event has made a significant impact on childhood cancer research in the last 15 years, and we want to make sure that your hard work and efforts are recognized. You have helped raise more than $2.8 million in research funds, and this year you have already raised more than $100,000. Please mark your calendars for our 2021 event, on March 5, 2021.

Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and one out of five of them will not survive. Your support makes a difference for them. Your contributions and fundraising efforts will help researchers find safer treatments for growing bodies, and someday a cure for childhood cancer.

Thank you for your unwavering support.

The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation, a local nonprofit dedicated to fighting childhood cancer, is hosting “Brave the Shave” events in 2015 to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. But what is the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and what is “Brave the Shave?”

St. Baldrick’s is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money to fund pediatric cancer research. Specifically, they fund clinical cancer treatment trials, collaboration between cancer researchers, education and training for more pediatric oncologists, and supportive care research (which deals with side effects of cancer treatment, psychosocial impacts of cancer treatment, and much more).

In conjunction with this nation-wide organization, NNCCF is hosting two “Brave the Shave” events in the Northern Nevada area.

NNCCF’s “Brave the Shave” is a hair-shaving fundraiser whose proceeds go towards St. Baldrick’s pediatric cancer research efforts. NNCCF has raised more than $1.2 million and shaved more than 1,800 heads at these “Brave the Shave” events. Those who shave their heads at this event, called “shavees,” raise money, get pledges from community members, and stand in solidarity with children fighting cancer, many of whom lose their hair as a result of their cancer treatment.

The first “Brave the Shave” is taking place at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena on February 27, 2015, 6:30-9:00 PM. The second event is happening at the Reno Livestock Center Exhibit Hall on March 20, 2015, 6:00-9:00 PM. People who attend the event can be shaves, volunteers, or come to watch and give support.

Donating to St. Baldrick’s is possible here.

More information about NNCCF’s involvement with St. Baldrick’s and the upcoming events is available here.

NNCCF contributes to childhood cancer research by hosting the Shave for the Brave fundraising event for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This year, we are celebrating our 13th Shave for the Brave event. Considering our foundation is not a research organization, hosting this fundraiser is an opportunity for us to support pediatric cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Last year, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation supported childhood cancer research grants and advocacy with $30,537,369.

Why is fundraising for NNCCF’s Shave for the Brave event important? Here are two facts that you should know:

Here’s how our Shave for the Brave event works: “Shavees” raise money by collecting pledges from family members and friends in support of childhood cancer research. Shavees can fundraise individually or join a team.  “Barbers” are certified cosmetologists or barbers that volunteer for the event, and shave participants’ heads with clippers until all hair is gone! Men, women, and children participate in this inspiring event.

To find current teams or to make your own click here. The fundraising platform is easy to use, and you can conveniently share your page with family and friends.

“They say two heads are better than one, so a whole team of bald heads is way better than one bald head. Teams can fundraise together (try a car wash or group garage sale) and encourage one another before, during, and after your head shaving event.” – St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Need help fundraising? Check out these fundraising tips and tricks from St. Baldrick’s. Please do not fundraise via Facebook. All donations made through Facebook fundraisers go directly to the St. Baldrick’s general donation fund, and cannot be transferred to participants, teams, events or other pages.

The event made it into St. Baldrick’s Top 20 largest fundraising events. Our top three Shave for the Brave 2017 teams’ accomplishments are below:

Your support is needed to help our teams reach new goals. Each team will be selflessly fundraising around our community to support childhood cancer research. Six Easy Tips to be a Top Fundraising Team

Kehl is the team captain for Kylee’s Wish. Last year the team raised $57,456 for childhood cancer research, and in 11 years they have raised almost half a million dollars. Each year they participate in NNCCF’s Shave for the Brave event and rally the Reno/Sparks community in the most inspiring ways.

Kylee's Wish Reno

Kehl put together six tips to help participants and team captains:

Lead by example. Take on as much as you can personally. This shows your team you have skin in the game. It’s easy for most folks to just donate something, putting in the time and effort is the hard part.

Be prepared for changes. Just like cancer, stuff happens and you just have to adjust and make the best of it.

Embrace everyone, and if you can, try to reach out in person as much as possible.

Most of all a simple “thank you” goes a really long way. These people work really hard and do as much as they can. Team captains need to appreciate each and everyone’s own efforts.

Do a theme each year for your team. This makes it fun for everyone!

When Lisa (from NNCCF) calls help her, we want her to stick around.

Put these tips to good use! We want all of our participants for the head-shaving event to be successful.

Shave for the Brave is March 16, 2018 at the Downtown Reno Ballroom. It starts at 6 p.m. and ends when the last head is shaved (around 8 p.m.).

You still have time to join our head shaving event! Visit here to get started. There’s a minimum donation of $100 to shave at this event.

Remember – shaving with a team can make the experience more fun. You can receive support from your team and team captain. If you haven’t registered yet and would like to join a team visit here.

Girl with bald headMadelyn is in the sixth grade, 11-years-old, and currently has a bald head. This is her third year shaving her head to support childhood cancer research at the Shave for the Brave event hosted by the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Before each shave, Madelyn experiences a mixture of nervousness and excitement.  Although it can be a bit nerve-wracking, she does it in support of her grandmother who recently battled leukemia.

Madelyn’s mother, Laurie Bowman, explains that her daughter has a very special relationship with her grandmother, “Madelyn is a “mini-me” of her grandmother, Marilyn,” she said. “She calls her every morning and fills her in on everything.”

Madelyn is the captain of her team the “Shampoo Savers” and is driven to one day be “Knighted” on stage – an award given after shaving for seven years.

At the Reno event on March 16, 2018, more than 240 people shaved and nearly $200,000 was raised for childhood cancer research. The fundraising cutoff for this event ends in July.  If you are interested in helping NNCCF and the participants meet the $200,000 goal click here.

The annual Shave for the Brave event at the Reno Ballroom gathers participants from all walks of life. There are numerous reasons why people are motivated to raise money and shave their head for childhood cancer research, Madelyn’s story is just the tip of the iceberg. Many teams have grown over the past 11 years and one of the largest teams is Kylee’s Wish with 46 participants who collectively raised $38,365 this year.

Teams gather and work together to broaden their fundraising reach and inspire people to get involved. Team Kylee’s Wish and team Scientific Games hosted a barbeque, raffle and silent auction, and team Sparks Firefighters held a pre-shave for families, friends, and civil servants unable to attend the big event.

It is astounding to witness the support in the Reno, Sparks, and Tahoe communities for childhood cancer research. Childhood cancer is the number one cause of death by disease for children in America.  But thanks to research and better therapies, more than 80% of U.S. childhood cancer patients now become long-term survivors.
